Marksville, La.–Charlie Flynn kicked off the 2014-2015 season of the Louisiana USSSA Junior Golf Tour by asserting himself as one of the premiere golfers on the circuit.
The 14-year-old Alexandria resident played up in age divisions in the season-opening Back-2-School Two and defeated the rest of the field last weekend at Tamahka Trails Golf Club.
Flynn led wire-to-wire despite a two-hour weather delay at the start of the tournament, shooting 152 to win the title in the Boys 15-18 division. This makes him the first golfer on the tour to play above his age group in a Louisiana USSSA tournament and win.
Colton Ryan, of Benton, finished three strokes behind Flynn to take runner-up honors. Thomas Wilmore, of Alexandria, returning to the tour after a seven month break, took third place honors by shooting 163.
In the Boys 12-14 division, reigning regional champion Chance Queen, of Alexandria, picked up his first win of the season by shooting 162. He held off runner-up Carson Caruso, of Greenwell Springs, by two strokes. Third-place finisher Kenton Sinitiere, of Franklin, shot 176.
A familiar face on the Louisiana USSSA Tour claimed the championship in the Boys 9-11 group. Peyton Canter, of St. Amant, picked up his first title of the new season by shooting 82. This marks Canter’s first championship on the USSSA Junior Golf Tour. Owen Hayden took up runner-up honors to Bogalusa by shooting 90. Bryce Sutterfield, of Oakdale, finished in third place with a score of 93.
Tour veteran Karlei Hemler kicked off the new season by resuming her winning ways. The Groves, Texas, resident shot 153 en route to picking up the Girls 15-18 championship. Madison Bates, of Alexandria, finished in second place by shooting 172. Madison Donnelly, also of Alexandria, shot 206 to take third place honors.
Daphne Tilton, of Iowa, won the Girls’ 12-14 group by shooting 260.
Caroline Covington, of Denham Springs, claimed the championship in the Girls’ 9-11 division by shooting 109. Alexis Gonzalez, of Baton Rouge, shot 119 in the 18-hole event to take runner-up honors.
The Louisiana USSSA Junior Golf Tour returns to action on September 20 for the Junior Mike’Open at the Farm d’Allie Golf Club in Carencro. The deadline for golfers to register for that event is September 17. For more information, visit www.usssatoday.com or e-mail robert.boudreaux@usssa.com.
